Auchroisk Single Malt Scotch Whisky Distillery History

Auchroisk, pronounced Auch Roysk means 'ford of the red stream' is one of Scotland’s youngest distilleries in built in 1974. The distillery was the fourth to be built by Justerini & Brooks. At the time J&B also owned Glen Spey, Knockando and Strathmill distilleries.

A water source, the Dorie's Well, was discovered, on what was to become the site of the distillery, that had the same qualities as the water used at the Glen Spey Distillery.

At the time production at Glen Spey could not meet the demand that J&B needed for its blends.

After extensive testing of the water, from the Well, it was tankered to Glen Spey distillery to be used in test distillations. These were successful so J&B went ahead with construction.

First released as a single malt, at the barely legal age, in 1978. Its name was changed to “The Singleton” in 1986 as a marketing ploy as it was felt that Auchroisk was too difficult name for the average customer.

As a further piece of marketing a miniature Singleton was sent to all the “Singleton’s" in the phone book.
  .
However the market moved on and there was more to be made from the traditional heritage aspects so “The Singleton” name was withdrawn from the market and replaced by the 10 year old Auchroisk Flora and Fauna bottling.

2008 saw the return of the use of Singleton in the name. This time as "The Singleton of Auchroisk"

Same single malt Scotch whisky just different names.
