Benromach Whisky Distillery History
The Benromach Distillery was founded in 1898 by F.W. Brickman, a Spirit broker from Leith and Duncan McCallum owner of the Glen Nevis distillery. The distillery was built to a Charles Doig design
In 1907 ownership passed to David McCallum. A brief closure during the First World War reopening in 1920 as the Benromach Distillery Ltd.
Closed in 1931 and remained silent for the next 6 years. Then in 1938 the distillery was sold to Train & McIntyre as part of Associated Scottish Distillers Ltd.
During 1953 DCL acquire Train & McIntyre and pass control of Benromach p to Scottish Malt Distillers.
The distillery was rebuilt in1966 and two new stills installed in.1974.
In 1983 the distillery was closed and production equipment dismantled.
New Owners
In 1993 Gordon and MacPhail purchased the distillery. The next 3 years involved careful planning for the refurbishment of the Benromach Distillery beginning with a major over-haul to re-equip the distillery with specially designed and commissioned new stills, a mash tun, remoulded wash backs.
In 1996 Gordon & MacPhail announced the revival of Benromach Single Malt Scotch Whisky, one of Speyside’s best-kept secrets.
Following the extensive re-equipping, distillation started once again in 1998, Benromach’s centenary year, and HRH The Prince of Wales performed the official re-opening in October of that year.
Benromach Visitor Centre
In August 1999 Benromach opened its doors to visitors and members of the public who are warmly welcomed to the Malt Whisky Centre, formerly the Drier House.
The Distillery and its Visitor Centre has a four star grading as a Visitor Attraction from the Scottish Tourist Board. Benromach is also on the world famous Malt Whisky Trail.
