Made up of single malts from more than one distillery
Before the great Cardhu debacle. There where Single Malts - Blends - Vatted Malts
Single Malts - A distillation of malt whisky from one distillery
Blends - Small amounts of different single malts (as above)
topped up with the cheaper to produce grain whisky
Vatted Malts - Made up of just single malts from more than one distillery
No grain whisky involved
Easy to understand? Yes
However because Cardhu muddied the waters and called the Cardhu a "Pure Malt" (as it was made up of single malts from more than one distillery). And only made a subtle label change.
The debate has been about what to call Vatted malts. Those in the know have decided that vatted malts should be now called Blended Malts.
See the confusion with Blends?
I think that the use of the word "blends" with vatted malts is more confusing as it has always been associated with the cheaper grain based whisky blends.
It would have been better to have stayed the same with vatted malts as it is exactly what it says on the bottle. or use Pure malt with no mention of blends.
Any way there are some great vatted malts. oops! sorry !! Blended Malts. These are single malt whiskies that have been carefully married together to create wonderful taste stiles.
