Hellyers Road Distillery is regarded as Australia’s largest boutique distillery going into production on the 29th January 1999 the first whiskies becoming available in 2006.
The whisky distillery is located in pristine dairy farming country on the outskirts of Burnie in North West Tasmania and is a fully-owned subsidiary of Tasmania’s second largest milk processing company, Betta Milk, and was established following deregulation of the Australian Dairy Industry in 1996.
Betta Milk remains in the ownership of local dairy farmers and the descendants of the farmers who founded the milk cooperative in 1956. It is an unlisted public company with 80 local shareholders. Apart from milk, the dairy operation produces cream, flavoured milks and orange juice while the distillery produces a range of five single malt whiskies, three whisky cream liqueurs and vodka.
In 2010 Hellyers Road was recognised by the Malt Whisky Association of Australia for producing the nation’s best single malt and in 2012 it released its first aged statement whisky – 10 Year Original.
In 2012 the business also signed a major distribution agreement with national liquor outlet, Dan Murphy Cellars and in February 2013 it shipped a full container load of single malts to France,
The distillery’s Pinot Noir Finish variety was recognised in blind tastings as the ‘Best New World Whisky’ at last year’s Whisky Live event in Paris. Negotiations are currently well advanced for a distribution deal to the United States.
The annual distillery capacity stands at 100,000 litres of pure alcohol with bottling capacity at 9000 bottles per week. Annual sales growth is forecast at approximately 100% while the distillery’s Visitor Centre attracts upward of 25,000 people each year, many of whom take advantage of the fully interpreted ‘Whisky Walk’ which also offers the opportunity to pour and wax seal your very own ‘Distillers Choice’ single malt. The current Bond Store inventory stands at 2000 x 200 litre casks.
Hellyers Road Distillery employs a gentle, crafted process to deliver a crisp, light-coloured and clean tasting single malt. The majority of grain used in the range is grown in Tasmania, combined with pure Tasmanian water delivered regularly on the winds of the Roaring Forties.
A traditional maturing process is employed by vatting and marrying in Ex American Bourbon Whiskey casks, the whisky range is bottled at 46.2% alcohol volume to deliver optimum flavour with a subtle and fulfilling finesse. As a result Hellyers Road single malts do not require chilled filtering, no caramel is added to colour the whisky.
The entire range is distilled, matured and bottled at the distillery. Each variety of single malt is a true embodiment of the purity and grandeur of Tasmania’s beautiful north-west region.
The flavour characteristics are uniquely Australian and reflect the region – Australia’s island state, Tasmania.
