Henry McKenna

Henry McKenna and his family’s whiskey recipe emigrated from Ireland in 1837 and settled as a farmer in Fairfield Kentucky, However he was more of a distiller than a farmer and founded his distillery there in 1855.

He soon adapted his methods to the local Kentucky grains, particularly corn, and began producing H. McKenna Old Line, Hand Made, Sour Mash Whiskey.

This became known as “Kentucky’s Finest Table Whiskey” and was known for its high quality due to McKenna insisting on its proper aging before bottling. McKenna died in 1893

The McKenna distillery was closed during prohibition, however stocks continued to be sold during the “Noble Experiment” on medicinal grounds,

In 1934 the distillery was reopened by McKenna’s descendents until 1941 when ownership passed to Seagrams, finally closing in the mid 1970’s. The Henry McKenna brand name passed to Heaven Hill in 1989.

Henry McKenna 40% Abv 80 proof

To this day, Henry McKenna Bourbon honours that heritage with a Bourbon that can be served with pride and poured without pretension.

Henry McKenna Single Barrel Bourbon

The only extra-aged bottled in bond Single Barrel Bourbon available today, Henry McKenna Single Barrel is aged 10 years before each “honey barrel” is dumped and bottled as is.

At 10 years and 100 proof, it meets the exacting US government standards for a true bottled in bond Bourbon.

Tasting Notes

Nose: There is a peppery pinch to the spicy nose, which fits perfectly with the dark brooding nature of the beast. The slightly singed toast acts as a perfect counter to the mint and orange rind. Really complex and tempting.

Taste: Wow! Loads of everything. As you might expect from the nose. A deep, satin-smooth oak and burnt sugar backdrop allows the malt and rye to have a big say. Lots of vanilla, too.

Finish: Here, as it dries, the corn comes into dominance. Some vanilla toffee, too.

Comments: Magnificent stuff from Heaven Hill that really is worth hunting for."
