Cambeltown Single Malt Whisky
Cambeltown is a historic Royal town and has been occupied for over 8000 years. Once home to a large fishing fleet, there were also no less than 34 distilleries established here during the 19th century.
However by 1925 and the closing of Reichlachan Distillery, this left Springbank and Glen Scotia as the only 2 remaining distilleries.
The 25th March 2004 Saw the opening of Mitchells Glengyle Distillery this increased the number of distilleries in Campbeltown to three, allowing the town to legitimately claim it place amongst the great whisky producing regions.
Home of the Glengyle, Glen Scotia and Springbank Whisky Distilleries. Cambeltown is infamous for the extraordinary high number of public houses and churches per capita.
It must be that the citizens having consumed one of Scotland’s best drams, they feel the need to give thanks to the almighty for these whiskies excellent qualities.
Glen Scotia Campbeltown Whisky Distillery
Founded in 1832 and managed to survive for 150 years before closing in the mid-1980s. It was reopened briefly at the end of that decade, but closed again in 1994. Since then it has been purchased by the Loch Lomond company and has been refitted and begun distilling again.
Springbank Campbeltown Whisky Distillery
Springbank Distillery is the oldest independent family owned distillery in Scotland. Founded in 1828 on the site of Archibald Mitchell's illicit still. It was Archibald's sons, John and William who took out a licence and started distilling legally as J & W Mitchell.
The Springbank Distillery is now in the hands of his great great grand son, Hedley G. Wright.
Springbank can rightfully claim to be the only distillery in Scotland to produce three styles of single malts, Springbank, Longrow and Hazelburn
Glengyle Campbeltown Whisky Distillery
The distillery is using a combination of new and reconditioned equipment brought in, on the site of the original Glengyle distillery, (1872 to 1925) the site has witnessed various uses, a rifle range (1940) Farmers co-operative 1970's by this time all the equipment had been stripped out and the warehousing used as a coach garage.
