Lagavulin Whisky Distillery History

The distillery, like all those on Islay was built on the shoreline to make possible the easier receipt of supplies and dispatch of whisky in small coastal vessels. Situated on the south shoreline of the island between Ardbeg and Laphroaig.

Illicit distilling had been carried out at Lagavulin for many years before. John Johnston established the first of two distilleries at Lagavulin in 1816. The following year a second distillery was built by Archibald Campbell. Johnston takes over both distilleries in 1825

By 1837 the was one distillery remaining, under Donald Johnston control in 1852 ownership passed to John Graham

During 1924 the distillery was taken over by White Horse Distillers Ltd which three years later became part of DCL. Who passed control to Scottish Malt Distillers Ltd. (SMD) in 1930.

The distillery was renovated in 1962

Major contributor to White Horse blends.

A distinctively Islay malt, powerful and demanding, complex with a dominant aroma of sea salt, peat and sherry. Palate: A dry smoky flavour with oily grassy notes complimented by a trace of sherry sweetness.

Lagavulin 16 year old Single Malt Scotch Whisky

A much sought-after single malt with the massive peat-smoke that's typical of southern Islay - but also offering a dryness that turns it into a truly interesting dram.

Strength: 43% ABV

Appearance: Deep amber gold.

Nose: Intense peat smoke with iodine and seaweed and a rich, deep sweetness.

Body: Full, rich.

Palate: Dry peat smoke fills the palate with a gentle but strong sweetness, followed by sea and salt with touches of wood.

Finish: A long, elegant peat-filled finish with lots of salt and seaweed.

Lagavulin Distillers edition Single Malt Scotch Whisky

When Lagavulin decided to produce a secondary cask-finished version - The Distillers Edition, there were doubters who thought nothing could be a match for the pungent strength of Lagavulinª. Those sceptics were unfamiliar with Pedro-Ximenez.

Strength: 43% ABV

Appearance: Deep gold.

Palate: Big flavour. Begins with sweetness, and ends with peat, smoke and hints of seaweed.

Finish: Incredibly long even by Lagavulin standards, smooth and rounded, with waves of sandy dryness.

Lagavulin 1990 limited edition release 12 year old Single Malt Scotch Whisky

Third of a very limited series of special releases from the essential Islay distillery. Delightfully subtle differences compared to previous 12 year old releases.

Strength: 57.8% ABV

Appearance: Very pale white wine.

Finish: Billows smoke, Lagavulinª peatiness. Slight fruit. Warming and long
