MacNaMara Blended Scotch Whisky
Pràban na Linne Limited is the only whisky company with its headquarters on the Isle of Skye, where Gaelic is still widely spoken. As the Gaels originally invented whisky, the company feels their whiskies are genuinely authentic.
From the beginning the whiskies they produce have been labelled in Gaelic and so they soon became known as "The Gaelic Whiskies". In Skye they say "having Gaelic on the label greatly improves the flavour"!
Pràban na Linne means "a smugglers den by the Sound of Sleat".The company is situated on the small private harbour of Eilean Iarmain looking over the water towards the mainland hills of Scotland.
Sleat is a parish in the south of Skye which is famous in history, known as "Lios an Eilean" ("the Garden of Skye") and also as "Sleite riamhach nam ban boidheach" ("brindled Sleat of the beautiful women") and is often mentioned in ancient Gaelic poetry.
The Company was founded in 1976 by Sir Iain Noble of Eilean Iarmain as part of a development project to create employment in the south of Skye, as so many young people were then leaving. The business has grown steadily, its reputation spread by word of mouth.
As one of the few remaining family businesses in the Scotch whisky industry, they have to compete with the Scottish whisky industry giants. Their main markets are Scotland and England, France, Holland, Italy and Canada. And are also represented in Switzerland, Japan, Denmark, Sweden and Russia.
Poit Dhubh Blended Malt Scotch Whisky
from The Gaelic Whisky Collection
Niche image as a connoisseur’s Malt Scotch Whisky – winning many awards in the international tasting competitions.
Pronounced “Potch Ghoo,” or PD for short, it means Illicit Still in Gaelic.
It is an Unchilfiltered malt, so may become hazy if cold but this delivers a richer, fuller flavour with a longer after-taste as a result.
The recipe is secret and was first created in 1984 from a very high quality mixture of Islay, Island, Highland & Speyside malts.
The flavour blends Islay peatiness & Speyside sweetness for a uniquely ‘sweetly peaty’ taste profile much less powerful than normal Islay whisky.
